Mastering the Many Meanings of "Look Up"

Do you ever get confused by the different ways we use "look up" in English? You're not alone! This versatile phrasal verb has several meanings, both literal and figurative. As your English coach (and US culture trainer), I'm here to help you improve your English language and communication skills and master them all.

Looking Upward

One can look up literally, gazing at the vastness of the sky or admiring a beautiful building.

Example: She looked up at the sky to admire the stars.

Seeking Knowledge

Looking up a word in a dictionary or researching something online are some ways to expand your knowledge.  Whether you're working on your business English for an upcoming meeting or looking up new vocabulary for your next social gathering, effective English communication skills can make all the difference in your career.

Example: I will need to look up the name of the restaurant. I just can’t remember it right now.

Looking Up to Someone

Looking up to someone is a figurative way to express admiration or respect.  Perhaps you have a mentor you admire for their work ethic, or a friend you look up to for their positive attitude.

Example: John looks up to his friend because he is always extremely motivated and disciplined.
